ʻAmaʻama or striped mullet is an endemic fish known for frequently fish ponds and is the biggest of the endemic mullet. ʻAmaʻama can grow to 27” and reach a whopping 10 lbs. One of the most revered fish in olden times, their hardiness and ability to raise made them perfect for loko iʻa and aquaculture. ʻAmaʻama have different names for their stages of life as well. Puaʻama are fingers length, kahala are hand length, ʻamaʻama are 8-12 inches and ʻanae are the biggest length above 12 inches.
For food sustainably, ʻamaʻama pose a great opportunity to raise protein for a healthy diet.
